Every year in Washington, England, American Independence Day is celebrated. For the past 2 years I have had the privilege of being a part of this event. I was asked to present the keynote speech this year. I must admit that when I was first asked to participate last year, I had my doubts. What could I expect of an Independence Day celebration held in the country that had lost the United States to this
War for Independence? I must say I was more than pleasantly surprised. I have never attended a more moving and patriotic celebration of the true meaning of American Independence than the ones that I have attended here. There was a reading from the Declaration of Independence, a section of the 'I Have A Dream' speech by Martin Luther King, and a selection of readings from other American Literature, singing of American songs, one of which was especially written for the occasion by one of the teachers. All in all it was just a fantastic event. The celebration was attended by over 450 High School students and another 100+ guests and dignitaries. A letter was sent from the Prime Minister to be read at the event, highlighting the friendship between the United States and Britain. It truly was a novel experience.
